About Us...

The Border Union Agricultural Society was formed at a public meeting in the Cross Keys Inn on 22nd January 1813 under the Chairmanship of the Duke of Roxburghe. The aims were to give Premiums for the best stock of different kinds, for discoveries in agriculture, either in regard to tillage or the management of grasslands and for the new and improved implements of husbandry. In 1866 a number of local Societies joined together. Since then, the Society has grown in size and prominence, and though principally holds three annual core events, namely a Championship Dog Show, a two day Annual Agricultural Show and the world famous Cydectin Kelso Ram Sales, it also hosts many other events throughout the year, some of which, have no agricultural connection. The Membership to the Society of over one thousand is from people of both rural and urban backgrounds and their interests are looked after by an office which is open all the year.

The activities of the Society took place at various venues around Kelso and the surrounding area until the 1940s when the two events of that time, the Show and the Ram Sales, came permanently to Springwood Park. In 1953 at the winding up of Springwood Estate, the Society bought the forty six acres of parkland adjacent to the Rivers Tweed and Teviot.

Springwood Park is now under development, some of which has been completed already with funding from various public bodies and the Society itself. Springwood Park now has two toilet blocks, a shower block, tarmac roads throughout and the new Exhibition Centre - Springwood hall. This development is ongoing and the Society hopes to see many further improvements to the site in the next few years.

Kelso Ram Sales - Friday 11th September 2015
The 2015 Kelso Ram Sales had 5689 Rams entered with 8 Auctioneers.

The old cliché of "the best sold well" came to the fore at the 2015 Ram Sales last Friday. This was not surprising as general opinion was that collectively there had never been such quality rams to choose from with an additional 725 on offer this year making a total of 5689 entries. The sheep trade has had a torrid summer so buyers were cautious throughout. Having said that generally consignors and buyers were pleased as were the eight Auction Companies. A very steady trade for quality sheep from all Breeds. By the end of the day 4313 rams (4271 - 2014) had changed hands for a total of £2,633,875 (£2,922,105) with an average of £610.68 (£684.17), a decrease of £73.49 on the year with a clearance rate of 75.81% (86%).

Championship Dog Show Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th June 2016

The Border Union Championship Dog Show may be young, but it has a character all of its own.

For a number of years a Dog Show was a feature of the Border Union Agricultural Show, held in July. Members of the Canine Section Committee lead by the late Mrs Margaret Lyndesay Smith as Chairman, with the late Jean Cook as Secretary, saw the opportunity to bring a Show of Championship status to the Borders and after Kennel Club approval, the first Championship Show was held on 8th August 1975.The Border Union Championship Dog Show is a qualifier for Crufts (details of how to qualify can be found on the Kennel Club website and in the Kennel Journal).

Springwood Hall is set in Springwood Park, the beautiful Border Union Showground. On the outskirts of Kelso and adjacent to the River Tweed Springwood Hall is surrounded by grass and trees. The Hal was built as part of a five year Development Programme at Springwood Park and was jointly funded by ERDF, SEB, SBC and BUAS. It is a versatile, multi-functional Exhibition Centre which has been successfully used for trade shows, conferences, fairs, concerts, weddings, balls and award nights.
